Documentation
One of the principal administrative tasks and responsibilities of Mr Holmes was the keeping and filling in of various record books issued by the Manchester Education Committee. Among these were the following:
Log Book
The log book was kept by the headmaster and contained details of events at the school, especially those worthy of permanent record in the life of the school. What was recorded in the log book and the amount of detail given was very much dependent on the particular head teacher at the time. In general, the log book normally recorded the appointment and absences of teachers, visits made to the school by such people as HMI inspectors, bishops, student teachers and religious inspectors, school trips and outings, changes in curriculum, school building or school name etc. It was very rare that individual children were mentioned by name.
School Staff Book
The school staff book was a register which contained details of teachers employed at the school. It included the name and address of the teacher, date of birth, type of teaching qualification, name of institution awarding the qualification, date on which engaged at the school, last school employed at, where they were formerly pupil teachers, and the date of leaving the school.
Admission Register
The admission register was compiled at the time of the pupil’s admission to the school. It recorded a pupil’s name, date of birth, address, date of admission and leaving.
Register of Summaries
This contained statistical summaries of numbers in attendance at the school on a weekly basis and a yearly overview of the figures. It did not mention individual pupils by name.
Punishment Book
The punishment book recorded the date, name of offender, their offence, date of punishment, details of what the punishment was, the teacher’s signature and any other remarks.
Accident Book
Both staff and pupils probably used accident books into which details were recorded of the date, name of person involved in the accident and action taken.
At St Gregory’s there were occasions when this information was recorded in the log book.
Staff Record Books
It became the custom and practice for each teacher to be issued with a record book which was used for the recording of lesson plans usually on a week-by-week basis.
Teachers’ Mark Books
Each teacher was issued with a special book which was used for the recording of marks given to pupils for such things as classwork, homework and tests.

Monsignor J. Kelly, Chairman of the Board of Managers
He was the parish priest of St John’s, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, and remained chairman of St Gregory’s board until his death in 1930.
When the school re-opened in August 1924 after the summer vacation, 38 new pupils presented themselves for admission. In the words of Mr Holmes, “This necessitated the formation of another class – named ‘G’.”
