Overseas trips, June 1962
The Whitsuntide holiday saw two Continental school trips organised: 50 senior boys visited Salzburg, in Austria, under the charge of Mr Brian Makin, and 60 junior boys visited Luxembourg under the charge of Mr Joe Deegan.
Trip to Salzburg, 1962
Pension Emminger, where the senior boys stayed. Among the teachers on the trip were Mr B. Makin, Mr K. Horrocks and Mr P. Purdy. Both Mr Makin and Mr Horrocks felt that they were a little short-staffed and asked if any sixth formers were willing to give a hand with the supervision. David Mackay and David Astin volunteered.
Among the boys were Andrew Quick and Peter Howard.
Boys and teachers pictured before entering Salzburg’s famous salt mine
This professionally-taken photograph is of members of the party as they posed on a fixed carriage prior to entering the salt mine. The man standing on the extreme left was the guide and the driver was towards the centre. On the rail carriage from the right-hand end are Mr B. Makin, Mr K. Horrocks and sixth formers David Mackay and David Astin. Note the protective clothing and the date. Known as the Salzburg Dürrnberg-Hallein Salt Mine, it had been worked for over 7,000 years since the time of the Celtic tribes and earlier.
