Switzerland, May 1959
This slightly ‘contaminated’ photograph features a group of seven boys, including Bob Lund and Tony Devine, and Mr Joe Deegan in the Swiss Alps with the Jungfrau in the background. They were staying in a lakeside hotel a couple of miles outside Interlaken and had passed the Eiger on the train ride up the mountains to reach this point. The boy on the far right, standing in front of Mr Deegan, is wearing his school blazer as did other boys on the trip. Unfortunately the film appears to have been double exposed which has led to the printing of a hybrid picture – hence the imprint, at the bottom, of houses, buildings and a road. This trip must have been a revelation for many of the boys, the Alpine environment being in marked contrast to that of grimy Manchester.

This photograph was snapped by pupil Tom Clarke using a Kodak camera. The middle two boys are probably Mike Mannion and Terry Anderson. Said Tom: “We travelled up the Jungfrau mountain via a ‘train’ inside the mountain and came out to see superb views.”
