England basketball players, 1965
Fourth-year pupils Peter Klikucs, left, and Bogden Bossowski had the distinction of being selected to represent England Schoolboys at basketball at under-15 level. They played a number of times including against Wales and Combined Services and were on the court at the same time. To have two boys from the same school playing for England was quite remarkable. What’s more, they were in the same class, 4G, and in class photographs for the first three years stood next to each other on the back row.
England basketball champions, 1965
The school’s under-15 team, which included Peter Klikucs and Bogden Bossowski, won the All-England Championship Cup as well as the Manchester Catholic Championship in what was a highly successful season.
Basketball successes
Season 1964-65 was highly successful for the school’s basketball teams and for a number of individual players who were selected for various regional and national teams. The full list of these achievements and honours can be viewed in the Speech Day programme of July 1965. Credit for these successes was in no small part due to the expert coaching, drive and enthusiasm of Mr Gerry Quinn, head of PE, who would shortly be leaving the school in order to take up a position at Christ’s College of Education, Liverpool.

F.A. Youth Challenge Cup – Second Round
This tie, between Manchester City and Manchester United youth teams, was played on Monday, 11th December 1965 at Maine Road. Playing for City was Chris Glennon of St Gregory’s. The line-up, which included stars of the future, was as follows:
Mercer and Allison visit
Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, manager and assistant manager respectively of Manchester City, paid a visit to St Gregory’s and met Mr McGawley to discuss the possibility of Chris Glennon signing for City as a professional footballer. Eventually signing for City, Chris developed into a fine centre forward and had the knack of being a prolific goal scorer for youth and reserve teams. Unfortunately, he was unable to reproduce his form when given first-team opportunities, which were few in number. Between 1969 and 1971 he played on the City first team on only four occasions, failing to score any goals.

1967-68, 4th Year: winners of the Manchester Cup, Catholic Cup and Lancashire Cup
