The singles match went to three sets. Both players were students in Lower VI at the time and both also represented the Manchester Boys’ team in matches in Oldham, Skelmersdale and elsewhere. They attended practice sessions with Manchester Boys at Moston Brook High School.
Gerard Walsh, who began playing the game in his fourth year, recalls receiving his colours – a cloth badge featuring Manchester’s coat of arms – at the 1970 Speech Day ceremony at the Free Trade Hall.
Mr Malcolm Bebbington, a teacher of technical drawing from 1965 to 1974, took the boys for badminton and often drove them to tournaments where they competed against older and more experienced players.

Referees’ course
For teachers wanting to become qualified referees, the Manchester Schools’ Football Association organised evening courses from time to time. One such course, attended by Mr Casey, was held at St Gerard’s RC Secondary School in New Moston, the headmaster of which was Mr John Goggins, a well-known Football League referee at the time. Led by Mr Goggins, the course lasted several weeks and culminated with the taking of an examination. Teachers were given an awareness and understanding of the laws of the game, together with their interpretation and application. The qualification was especially important in the refereeing of Cup matches.
