Leaver’s reference letter, July 1940
Illustrated is a letter of reference, or testimonial, handwritten by Mr Wilfrid Holmes, headmaster, giving details of the good character and achievements of school-leaver William Roe, together with comments about his suitability for employment. Note the Manchester City Council coat of arms and letter-headed paper issued by the Manchester Education Committee. It had generally been the practice that all leavers received a similar letter as well as a Leaver’s Certificate.
Junction of Ardwick Green North and Higher Ardwick, August 1940
This interesting photograph shows some of the old houses and shops that would later be demolished thereby enabling St Gregory’s, which can be seen to the left, to extend its building along Higher Ardwick. The houses appear to be derelict. Note the cobbled roads, tramways and posts supporting overhead electric wires for the trams.
