Speech Day
The second annual Speech Day was held in the Free Trade Hall on Friday, 21st February 1958 at 7.00pm. Once again, on behalf of the governors and staff, the headmaster invited parents and guests to the ceremony. The school was closed that day in order for a rehearsal to take place. The following surviving three-page programme, originally held by the Free Trade Hall and currently held off-site by Manchester Central Library, is a reminder of the occasion.
New name
From the 4th March 1958, the name of the school changed to “St Gregory’s Technical High School”.
Feast day
The Feast of St Gregory was celebrated in 1958 with Solemn High Mass at 10.00am at St Aloysius’ Church with the celebrants being Fathers O’Keefe, Manley and Sharkey, all old boys of the school.
Old gymnasium
Located at the northern end of the yard, this old and unstable building had suddenly become very dangerous with pillars leaning noticeably to the right. The matter was reported to the LEA with a request that it be treated as an emergency. An inspection took place the following day. This was in June 1958, shortly before it was going to be demolished to make way for the new extension.
Secretaries
Mrs Richards, the school’s secretary since 1949, resigned in 1958 and was replaced by Mrs Doherty.
Trolleybus, late 1950s
With many pupils taking up to ten hours a week travelling to and from school, public transport was an important part of the Gregorian’s daily life. This trolleybus is pictured turning out of Stevenson Square in Manchester city centre. A Free School Travel Pass was issued if the distance between the pupil’s home and the school, by the shortest walking route, was three or more miles.
