Mr A.L. Smith, Headmaster 1975-77

Following the retirement of Mr W.L. McGawley, Mr A.L. Smith, 48, one of his deputies, was appointed as headmaster of the school. The rise to headship of Tony Smith is a remarkable story of a man who first set foot in the school in 1938 as a pupil, returned in 1949 as a teacher of mathematics – becoming head of the department some years later – and being appointed deputy headteacher in 1965.
